One thing that has always bugged me about the TES world is the easy access to fantastic materials. Because of this there is a "steel plate suxxorz" kind of mentality - after all, even glass is better than steel plate ... then to balance things you have to make steel swords weak so daedric looks good - now you have high level characters that can get whacked with a steel sword all day long and just shrug it off ... you get the idea.
I am more inclined towards a bit more realism in fantasy when it comes to weapons and armor. I like it when the fantastic stuff is exceedingly rare, and people are armed and armored a little closer to the way they would have been in the 1400s. Now I know that alot of people don't think this way; they love their daedric :). However, there are at least a few like minded people out there.
- Steel does not suck
- Plate armor will be very hard to get through - jack up the strength of plate.
- Plate armor will be rare, with only the wealthy able to afford it. It will also be expensive and very few armorers will know how to make it.
- Chain will be the most common warriors armor. Chain also will not suck, but it will not provide near the protection of plate. Probably will jack up the protective value of plate just a bit, but not much.
- Getting hit with steel weapons should hurt. Jack up the damage done by steel.
- Fantastic and magical weaponry are rare.
- Remove all fantastic and magical weapons and armors from shops. They can be had only through questing.
- Eliminate fantastic and magical weapons and armor from random treasure caches.
- This limits availability of fantastic and magical weapons only to specific quests or by killing a major NPC who might have some.
- Leather is very common. Most rogues and vagabonds will be wearing leather. A rogue leader might have chain but almost never plate.
The end result would go like this ... The ability of steel to damage and protect will be increased by a pretty fair amount, so getting hit with a steel sword will have serious consequences. The primary advantage of fantastic materials will be durability and enchantability, not damage done. To balance things, the weight of fantastic materials will be no more than steel.
Plate will be a rare sight and will mark a well off man. Chain will be pretty common and lesser forms of armor even more so. Orchish and Nordic, if they exist in the game, will be considered to be steel of superior craftsmanship. They will be slightly more protective and a good deal more durable to reflect higher quality, but they will not be wildly superior to regular steel plate.
Doing this will take some serious scouring in the CS. Treasure schedules will have to be redone, shop wares will have to be altered, NPC possessions will have to be adjusted, etc. In the end you will have a world where maybe just a few glass, ebony, or daedric items exist. Finding them will be tough and possessing a set will be something special.
And steel will hurt.
But it is unknown where to download this mod at the moment since the forum link is broken and no other links seem to exist.
