[edit] Description

This mod is designed to address issues with the Personality attribute and Speechcraft skill and the fact that they were close to meaningless. Originally you could always get people to like you no matter what your Speechcraft skill was using the simple mini-game. Now you won't able to max NPC disposition with just a few clicks irrespective of your Speechcraft skills. Now Personality plays a much greater role in how much you are liked, because disposition is much harder to increase using the mini-game.

Personality provides a base disposition and Speechcraft can be used to increase this; by a small amount in the beginning, and a much larger amount if you become good at Speechcraft. As a result NPC Disposition now also features more prominently in the game. Players with low personality will not be liked much, as you would expect and maxed disposition will now be the exception rather than the norm. Basically, players that choose Speechcraft as a major skill will now be rewarded and those who can't hold a conversation had better simply rely of their fame and factions to gain favour.

[edit] Changes

Persuasion Mini-Game

  • The Persuasion mini-game is now less effective. To begin with you'll find that the persuasion mini-game does not yield very positive results. If you keep practicing you will find that as your speechcraft improves you can eventually use it to greater effect.

Bribery

  • Bribery is less effective and bribery will no longer provide a bypass to good Speechcraft skills. Bribery has been priced in a manner that will encourage you to use it sparingly, when other avenues have been exhausted. Also, as your Speechcraft improves bribery will become easier.

Mercantile Skill

  • Your Mercantile skill increases at 2.5 times the rate of before (if you don't want this or if it conflicts with slower leveling mods you have to select compatibility version). The Master Perk is also now 1000 gold instead of 500.

Charm Spells

  • Charm spells are now scaled to be much less over powering, but still highly useful. There are two Novice Charm spells which are of limited effectiveness. There are two Apprentice Charm spells which are better. There is one Charm spell only Journeyman + can use and one Charm spell for Experts +.
  • There is also the Voice of Rapture which can now only be used by Master Illusionists. You will find it very effective at swaying minds (but not too effective!!). The Charm spell a high level wizard with fortified Intelligence could use is now only a bit better than Voice of Rapture.
  • Custom Charm Spells made at the Arcane University are no longer available. They were much too powerful. That means no more 100 Charm spells for 1 second!
  • Vampire's Seduction is the most powerful standard Charm spell, a bonus for Vampires. Imperial's Voice of the Emperor is now a worthwhile ability, and will deliver a good advantage.

[edit] Version History

1.8

  • The problem with the prices of charm spell scrolls is now corrected. They are now default price.
  • User made Charm spells can no longer be made. Small tweaks to improve 2 spells.
  • Small tweak in 'like' reaction (now 33% more effective).
  • Mercantile leveling increase has grown from x2 to x2.5 faster than default.

1.7

  • Re-scaled bribes. Bribes were becoming much too expensive for high level characters. Bribes are balanced now.

1.5

  • Due to an uploading error the default file in version 1.1, 1.11 and 1.12 the proclaimed changes to spells were not completed in the default file. Version 1.5 fixes it all up.

1.12

  • Added a no spell compatibility version.

1.11

  • Added a no Mercantile compatibility version.

1.1

  • I have adjusted charm spells base cost. This ensures that user made charm spells can no longer be abused.
  • Added entirely new scale for all Charm spells.
  • Made bribes a little cheaper.

[edit] Reviews

[edit] Review by Smokindan

A little background first, I suppose :) My first and only character in Morrowind was a Dark Elf Rogue and, of course, I loved my Personality attribute. I was very disappointed with Mercantile and Speechcraft in Oblivion as I felt they really didn't have any effect on the game. Anyone could bribe someone to like them and Mercantile levelled too slowly to be of any use (unless you had the money to train it.) This mod addresses those concerns with both skills and is a solid package. It's a lot harder to increase disposition, so now Speechcraft actually impacts upon the game. Mercantile increases faster and the Perks for it are improved. It's a great improvement, though make sure you actually want to work to make people like you before downloading. Highly recommended.
